In the Ninth Symphony the chorus, standing before God, sings:

In 1809 Baron Tremont came to Vienna to bring Napoleon the resolutions of the state council. Beethoven presented him with a leaf from his sketchbook dating to the time when the Piano Fantasy had its first performance. This leaf indicates how close to the Ninth Symphony one is at that time, for on it appears the beginning of the first movement of the Ninth Symphony; sheet-lightning that precedes the eruption of the symphonic thunderstorm in 1817.
